    Simply put (my favorite way), vital is necessary, mandatory, can't be without.


    "Patricia's research was vital to the third chapter.  Without it, all the historical information would have just been guesswork."

    its terminology that im not certain I would be involved with. Its suppose to be good. in my best memory. I think it means important also.
