Ihad my first cavity when i was 24... Now It seems like every time I go to the dentist I have a cavity...

Growing up we were an "if it aint broke, Dont fix it" kinda family.. I never went to the dentist until I was 22.  Now that  Igo for regular visits.. It alway semms like there is something wrong...

Are regular dentist cleaning really a good idea?

Granted I am allergic to store bought toothpaste .. And dential flouride treatments... (anything with artifical sweetenter).

what do you use to brush your teeth with ?
    Jenn

I found a natiral toothpaste about a year ago.. But it did not have any floride.. They started offering a floride toothpaste the middle of this year.... Before that it was baking soda and peroxide with peppermint oil.

    Buy natural toothpaste.

I floss twice a day and brush at least three times. I also use a water pic.  I haven't had a cavity since I was twelve which is good becuase I faint in the Dentist chair.  I am wildly afraid.

The only work I have had done is the replacement of the fillings that I have had since I was a child.  I do go for regular teeth cleaning.

    You can refuse the flouride.

    what is '' natural toothpaste ? ''
    mycatsmom

my dentist hasn't used flouride for a long time.

Tom's is natural and I am not sure of other brands. Check your local natural health store. I can find them at the grocery store but organic and natural are very popular here.
    Jenn

Toms did not offer a florise toothpaste....ANd I had to order 12 tubes at a time... Couldnt aford that...
Burts Bees started a floride toothpaste this year. But the damage was pretty will under way. I use Berts now.

I went to the dentist today. I have a small cavity where an old filling has come loose. I wasn't taught good dental hygene as  a child .I had to get 13 fillings when I was around 10 years old, it hurt and it scared me enough to where I made it a goal to never get another cavity.   My morning dental hygene routine in this order is:

    1. Gargle with mouth wash.

    2. Scrape tongue with tongue scraper.

    3. Brush my bottom teeth and rinse--reload toothbrush with toothpaste.

    4. Brush my top teeth and rinse.

    5. Floss my teeth.

Now I reload my toothbrush with a different brand of toothpaste.

    6. Brush my gums and rinse and reload my toothbrush again with more paste.

    7. Brush the roof of my mouth and rinse and reload toothbrush  with toothpaste for the final time.

    8.  I brush my tongue again. I stick the toothbrush down the back of my throat and brush.

    9. The last thing I do is gargle one more time. All of this takes me about 15 to 20 minutes each morning.

My dentist told me today I have a very healthy mouth. He did tell me that I brush to much though. Fish Girl, I'm like you, I don't pass out but I  always cry. I'm chicken!!

    Jenn

I cant use any mouthwashes becuase of the artificial sweetenters.. And I only found a natural toothpaste with floride this past year. But I am a brush rince brush girl.

I have somewhat the same regimen as you, and I STILL get a lot of decay! Maddening ! I think it's genetic b/c my brother and my aunt hardly ever had a cavitiy, but my mom and dad had many, if not all teeth pulled out.
    FISH-O

I am a fanatic ... that last filling at 12 was the final straw.... It's nice to know I am not the only one!

That's good....because if you're not true to your teeth, they'll be false to you!

    mycatsmom

hahahah. I thought I was the only one who remembered that old joke. Soupy Sales used to write that on his chalk board during his lunch show for kids back in the 50s.....when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

You're asking the wrong person here, all of my teeth are bad and need to be pulled out...$$$$$...........

    mycatsmom

to what do you attribute them needing to be pulled out ? I have had cavity after cavity in every tooth since I was a kid, and only had one pulled out.
    jhharlan

I've been to many dentist over the last 5 years and they all say to have them pulled, they're all broken off.........

My two brothers were sugar junkies. I on the other hand didn't care for sweets as a kid, yet I had the worst teeth in the family, go figure.

    mycatsmom

when we were little, my brother never brushed his teeth , adn I brushed them faithfully . Now, he's got very good teeth, adn he's 65. And I've got the lousy teeth.....so yeah, go figure. It's not fair.

Why do you think that is? Has your dental hygiene changed? Has your diet changed? Can you trust the dentist...maybe he's "finding cavities" where there are none?

    Jenn

My dentist is amazing... I cant use floride... It is all me...

*If every time you go to the dentist you have a cavity, I would go to a different dentist.. Just for starters..

    mycatsmom

yeah, you might have something there.

Soot and salt is what they used

    mycatsmom

My mom used to brush her teeth with salt, b/c that was all they had. Then, she got enamored with tooth powder . Anybody remember that ? And she used it long after tooth paste came out. Do they still sell that ? ....does anybody know ?
    mycatsmom

Where'd they get soot....from a coal or wood burning furnace ?

Why are you laughing? My dentist just pulled one of my teeth out. I don't see much to laugh about in that. But it was the wrong one! hopefully this wasn't you Jenn....

    Jenn

My dentist is the most gentle thing in the wolrd.. I never feel a thing... Not even the numbing shot.. He uses a topical gel were he puts the shot.. And I dont feel a thing. I adore him. And he Talks about tv and his kids, just like we were out having coffee... The procidures always fly by.
    melandrupert

country bumpkin I will try and do deep breating but its hard when you have a mouthful of Dentist equipment in your mouth! thanks anyway xxx

Jenn I wnat your Dentist NOW I am coming over I think American Dentist are far better that the UK ones when I was in the States this guy was great and I wasnt frighten then I came beck to the UK and it all started again I useto get put out well not put out that rape drug cant remember what it called oh Rhohipnal brilliant didnt feel a thing think I might go back and have it again thanks Jenn xxx

I got the same maddening problem.......only it started when I had baby teeth. Mostly, tho, I had my permanet teeth drilled  on when I was a kid; and OH! That hurt !!!  b/c the dentist didn't give me any local anesthetic!! . I remember twice getting up from that dental chair and everything started to go black, b/c I started to faint; and I said, Mom!  i can't see !

Close to 5 years ago , I had chemo, and that did the number on my teeth----b/c chemo lowers your immunity to almost  zero. So, in the years since then, the rate of decay has picked up and I've graduated to root canals and even having a tooth pulled out last summer !   :-(

How are you doing? Has your Doctor been able to pinpoint what is making you feel bad lately? I hope you are better. I have not seen tooth powder at the store. I guess that's as ancient as our grear grandparents! (*~*)
    melandrupert

country bumpkin its a filling that is comming out and its getting sore no your right there isnt any tooth powder sooooo old now heeee I only suffer Panic attacks now with the dentist I feel I cant breath thank you for your concern xxx

Keep off soda drinks, avoid sugar, the frequency of consumption is more important than the amount so far as tooth decay is concerned. Little and often is worse, but diabetes can be  caused by sugar so eat as little as possible. Chew gum containing xylitol, this is a natural sweetener which can repair early tooth decay. Your dentisy may be doing unnecessary work so get a second opinion.

I refuse to give up my chocolate. It's the only bright spot in my day; other than this :-)
    nomdeplume

Don't worry about chocolate, it is beneficial if you stick to the black stuff, 70% or above cocoa solids.
