MANY straight couples may prefer to live together in a common law situation, but that doesn't mean ALL do.
What I have learned is that all states, except California, recognize common law marriage after a specified period of time, depending on the laws of the state in which they reside. If a common law "married" couple moves to California, the couple will be considered married in California.
So, there is a "loophole" for couples who think they aren't married (except those who stay in or never move to California).
I think a big problem is the little regard and respect that is given to marriage in today's world (at least in the United States). Too many children today are being raised by grandparents or a single parent, or a combination of the two. The relationships between man and woman these kids see is often violent and abusive, temporary at best.
The parents of today are the children of my generation. My generation was from the 60's; it was sex, drugs, rock and roll (or whatever, I kinda missed it being a prude). Anyway, those peers of mine are the ones who raised the parents of today. Doesn't look like they did a very good job of it, does it?

Is it somthing to do with divorce laws and how men are treated by the courts by any chance. I don't know, I am only asking . I know I work with a lot of upset and ruined men who have little if anything left after their divorces. Also marriage is very expensive to arrange and carryout in fact it's a bit of a racket the cost of it.

This comment is for alfredd not you Ducky - so sorry again.
I think a lot of it has to do with economics and television. Economics . . . you can't afford the wedding the apartment etc. But it's easy to just move in. Plus there are so many options in society a lot of people, particularly men, do not want to get married. I heard some women say they would like to get married to get the ring, or to just have a ceremony. "What's love got to do with it?" some feel. TV, from that stand point, everything is quick and beside the point. As far as gay people. They can have rules to make their lives more comfortable just like everybody else. The 'rules' are here for us humans, we're not here for the rules.
