@halsey-- Both of my cars I own are American (Dodge Magnum and Corvette) I can say I have had no problems 'so far' with either one of them. But you are right, back in the late 70's and 80's American cars were troublesome.  I lived in Ohio back then, There's much auto building in the Cincinnati area, I remember one time when I was in my wife's new Toyota one of the UAW autoworkes said to me after looking at the toyota

'What's that crap?? You're American ain't-cha?? Why don't you BUY American??"

    i simply said to him...

" I will buy American when you guys start building American!."

Fortunately, American auto industry begin taking notes, now today I would put 'any' American car up against anything coming out of Japan, or Germany for that matter..

Bristol Beaufighter 5.7 Chrysler v8 one used to live acrooss the road from me . I read once that Bristols are supposedly the safest cars in the world only 16 people killed in them . Think it may be because they are rather rare and built out of second hand Centurian parts . Think there was a long range twin engined fighter plane named this also WW2. My brother took 30 ' of hedge out in a Morris thousand van and two gate stumps pushed the engine back into the batery box 1969 H registered model got out ok though . Njssan Micra fantastic cars 140000 miles out of C25 KCK b4 it was sold and it kept going

Thank you Dunc for your answer and info. Had a boyfriend with a Bristol years ago and when we went to France there were so many onlookers like a work of art. It was Maroon in colour with all that leather and wood interior - yes I did know the aircraft connection etc. but quite in the detail you have said.

If I could,I would have a Rolls Royce.Hand crafted art on wheels! But I have other bills to pay(like ALL of them).I am happy with my Ford Escape.A very reliable and efficient car for me.Not the jazziest looking ride on the road but it fills the need.

Untill 1 year ago I was the owner of a 1994 Ford F-150 pickup. When I sold it with 194,000 miles on it.The reason for selling it was I hardly drove it any longer. No use insuring a vehicle that only saw a few thousand miles a year for the last 2 years I had it.Still was sorry to see it go !

seems like most cars made in japan are relieable as well as great on gas as far as luxury why not a mercedes or most any german car at that.rather sad  that the usa just can't make em that good..

Toyota's have always worked great and lasted a very very long time for me.

It depends on your preferences. You may need a 'family car' or an 'economy car' or interested in a performance automobile. Narrow it down and do research.

Whatever the case, there has been a misperception that American cars are somehow inferior to foreign autos. Just today I read of Cadillac's CTS-V of not only being competitive to BMWs but several auto experts say the CTS-V is a perfect blend of power, style, performance, luxury and reliabilty and surpass BMW models in the price range. The Chevy Cruise, which is designed to compete with foreign models such as Honda's Civic and Hyundai is said to be the best value in an economy car as it offers far more features than it's competitors and has a high build quality and excellent fuel economy. The Chevy Malibu is a beautiful car with excellent quality and balance of style and interior comfort which I believe beats the Honda Accord. One of my favorites is the Ford Taurus SHO. This car is good looking and high performance along with high build quality. The key here is that the days of American cars being inferior to foreign counterparts are gone. American cars have scored extremely high in design, engineering and quality. Buick is the car of choice for newly rich Chinese and is the top seller in China.

Hyundai is a 'rising power' in the automobile industry. However, I have read a few articles of Hyundai which is led by a convicted white collar criminal that was pardoned by the Korean government because of his expertise on the automobile industry and was instrumental in turning around Hyundai into a world class car company prior to his arrest. The deal here is that the government of South Korea allowed this as it is a Korean goal of becoming the world's number one auto manufacturer.

There are so many autos that this is a difficult question to answer but I did want to answer that American cars are some of the best looking, performing and reliable cars in the world now. Gone are the days of the famous poor quality American cars of the 70's-80's and early 90's.

The best answer I can give you is to narrow your search for a new car by what type of model and then research all that make that particular one. You may be surprised at what you will find.

    My picks:

performance sports car- Corvette ZO6, performance coupe and sedan- Cadillac CTS-V, midrange high performance sedan- Ford Taurus SHO, family car- Chevy Malibu, economy car- Chevy Cruise, I really want a Chevy Volt. The Volt is the most technologically advanced car on the road.

There will be several responses to my 'answer'. Alot of Americans hate American cars which is sad considering we are Americans and should attempt to buy American. I wouldnt buy American if the quality, style, comfort and reliability were the same as YEARS AGO but American cars have improved so well that many are considered world class and Americans, for some reason, will forget we are in two wars but will never forget and forgive the 'bad days' of the American auto industry along time ago.
