I was and still am a "texture" eater, if I don't like the way it feels, I won't put it in my mouth... I've gotten a lot better as I've aged though. I'm picky now but I was the epitome of picky when I was a kid.....Give them time and make sure they are hungry when they come to the table......

When I was a kid it was the smell of lamb that turned me off. Now I am an adult ... it is still the smell of lamb that turns me off, so much so ... I can't even look at it.

Sadly Dunc your kids, just like all kids have been brainwashed by the McDonalds hype. The meal you described sounds delicious but they would rather eat the junk. What are ya gunna do?(Shrug)!
Ps,The folks next door to me are lebanese. They are nice folks but they love mutton & cook it all the time.Yuk!

Your kids probably like the McDonald's environment as well-- There's more to food than taste. When my family owned a restaurant in Ohio, we sold carry out-- many times people would call to say it didn't taste right, this was because the atmosphere was not in the carry out containers, the visuals.
That said, I don't eat lamb either, I just don't like the gamey taste. people's taste buds are also conditioned, you can eat at the most awful restaurant but you will acquire a taste for it, then go to a good restaurant and you won't like it.. I think you brought your kids to Mcdonald's too many times.
