They are much cheaper than a horse. Much of what you listed are accessories, not needs. A bottle of flea shampoo can last years. Add garlic to the dog's diet and fleas and ticks will stay away. They do not like garlic. You can trim your dogs nails. You do not need to pay someone to do it. Doggie accidents are avoidable if you put your puppy on a good routine and close off rooms to him that have carpeting. Urine easily cleans up off a hard wood floor, tile floor or linoleum. A well behaved dog does not damage furniture. A muzzle will keep him/her from chewing up the car. A blanket protects the seat. Cleaning up after a dog saves the grass. I have two males and no grass damage. A tie out is cheaper than fencing. Put a fence around the air conditioner to the dogs away from it. Get the cut off fencing from the DYI store as you will not need a lot and cut offs are cheaper.

It can if you add garlic to their food to deter fleas. My dogs do not have fleas. I give them garlic. Have a bottle of fleas shampoo that came in the vet kit. Haven't opened it yet. Horses eat grass. If you do not have a big enough pasture, they eat the roots once they've finished with the grass. Polyurethane will protect the hardwood and making sure the dogs nails are trimmed helps too. Dog food just seems to cost more. Divide out how much it actually costs to feed a dog per day. It's less than what it costs to feed a person per day. My brother dug a gully and put the fence down into it then filled the gully with rock and dirt. The dogs do not dig under it. Even if they were to try, they would hit rock and more fence.

Livery costs - hay & straw - hard feed - insurance - vet bills - farrier bills plus more. Yes a very expensive pastime.   

Well, the question is what are you going to do with it?  Is it to be a PET, or an animal that you intend to use for your work or pleasure?  If so, what discipline, and therefore the expenses will go accordingly.  Basically, are you prepared to stable it, (what are your zoning laws, in your area) with the fencing, barn, etc. you may be better to rent a stall at a local stable.  In fact, maybe a partial lease is best for you, where you split costs with a couple of other folks, and get to ride a few times per week.  Sounds like you should start that way, as you may not actually be ready for ownership.  At least you are planning, many do not!
