I bit my nails as a child until they bleed. I was compelled by that annoying little rough edge on my nail that snagged everything including my attention. Being anxious and hyperactive and addicted to sweets contributed to my urge to nibble that little scratchy thing at the tip of my finger off with a tiny little nibble while no one was looking. "Bobby! Stop that!" mom would call out whenever I got my hand near my face. I got fingernail files and clippers for Christmas which helped a little and I gradually learned that if I kept my nail file with me that that would help. But if I didn’t have my nail file…bite it off would reduce that nail to a bloody end very quickly. I had to work on keeping a quality nail file with me at all times and toward the end of my habit I tried someone’s suggestion to sit in front of a mirror and actively bit my nails to see how other people see me when I was doing that. That, ended my habit and I have used a nail file ever since. My nails now are neat and clean. I don’t polish my nails unless I will be going out in a tux or to dance (ballroom). But I am 66 now and my dancing days are done.
