well my friend,i do know a little about Osteoarthritis,Yes it can be Hereditary,And you can have trauma, and you can wear it out...Osteo Mainly effects the weight bearing joints,if you have minor pain, exercise will help, swimming or bike riding, and take Glucosamine and Chondroitin in early stages can help,,I think i will just give you something to read..All the best mate..         http://www.arthritisvic.org.au/Complementary-Therapies/Complementary-Therapies/Glucosamine-and-Chondroitin

I don't think anything causes osteoarthritis, i think its hereditary - The loss of cartilage in the joints.  Arthritis can possibly be caused by injury to a joint but I believe its more hereditary.

    Check out,

    www.niams.nih.gov/Health_info/Osteoartris/osteoarthr                  lots of information.

My guess, heredity.  And joint abuse, lack of calcium, certain vitamins and minerals.  Exercise is important, too.....

I reckon your on the money, except for the calcium, the main thing about Osteo,is the disappearance of cartilage ( shock absorbers ) from between the bones..All the best JH..>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<..
