    Instructions
    1
Pull out the paper tray as far as you can and look for any jammed or torn paper. Remove all the paper from the tray, then shine a flashlight into the printer to locate any additional paper. Be particularly vigilant if you printed labels, since those labels can peel off the page and wrap themselves around the rollers and bars inside the printer. Shine a flashlight into the printer if it doesn't use a paper tray. Find the tray rollers inside the printer.

    2
Remove any stuck labels by dampening a cloth and holding it against the rollers or bars. Turn the roller or bar while holding the damp cloth firmly against it to loosen up the label, then carefully peel the stuck label off and discard it.

    3
Check the rest of the paper path for paper jams. This includes the area underneath the toner cartridge and the area around the fuser cartridge. If there is a paper jam anywhere in the printer, the paper won't feed through until the jam is removed. The fuser cartridge is located on the left side on large HP laser printers and behind the rear access door on smaller laser printers. The fuser cartridge is black, with a yellow warning label indicating that the unit is hot, and blue clips that hold the fuser in place. Carefully pull out any paper wrapped around the sides of the fuser cartridge.

    4
Pull the paper tray out and remove the paper if the paper still doesn't feed. Slide the tray as far as it will go, then gently lift up the bottom of the tray while pulling it the rest of the way out.

    5
Reach inside the printer and locate the tray rollers. If the tray rollers are smooth, they can no longer grip the paper and pull it through. Slide each roller off the bar and replace it with a new roller, then replace the tray and send a test job to the printer. The best way to tell if the rollers are worn is to run your fingers over them. The roller surface should feel rough and bumpy. If your fingers slide over the rollers easily, they need to be replaced. You will feel the rollers snap into place when you put the tray in the printer. For laser printers, the tray rollers are located inside the unit, behind the location where the paper tray goes. For inkjet printers those rollers are just inside the printers, where the paper feeds into the printer. These rollers cost only a few dollars, and they can be purchased at many office supply stores. When you buy a maintenance kit for an HP laser printer, a supply of tray rollers is included.
