Black is viewed as a somber color. For centuries people viewed death as a sad thing and ending and not a continuation. It was not something to be celebrated. Colors outside of black were seen as festive and not proper for mourning the ending of a life. Today, a lot of people now see death as a continuation of Soul as it steps into it's new existence. They celebrate that Souls life and the time they shared with it here on earth. Colors are now acceptable for this celebration of life.

The practice in the US has dropped off considerably since the late 1920's and 30's.
