Why do pit bulls constantly scratch and lick?
We have a pit bull who constantly licks, scraches, bites at skin? We bathe him, have put flea stuff on him, give him yeast and olive oil. Am on limited income and vet visit is so expensive but wonder if this is natural and is there something else we should be doing?

You've got pretty much everything covered Bathe him only 1X per month though as too many baths can dry out his skin. For some reason licking is a common trait with pitbulls. My brother has two and my neighbor has 3 and they are all prone to licking. As for the itch, I can only suggest Benadryl if there's no other obvious reason for the itching. There are wet wipes for dogs that can be used in between the monthly bath. Some have aloe in them. That may help to condition his skin more.

Sounds as though they may suffer from dry skin. Topical treatments would be one way but not necessarily an answer. In many cases it's actually best to try to find out why the dry skin is occuring, sometimes the dog needs a different dog food which has Omega 3's. I use Eukanuba for my 6 hunting dogs, 4 of which are short coated dogs prone to having dry, itchy skin. My vet recommended the Omega 3 ingredient to help out first before trying any creams or ointments. Also, there is Omega 3 in liquid and pill form which can be added to the dogs food at each meal.
