Male ants do not live very long--generally about a few weeks. Queen ants can live many years. Worker ants may live seven years and the queen may live as long as 15 years. A queen of the Carpenter species, very common in America, can live up to 25 years, for example. Her workers can live up to seven years . Lifespans of ants vary from species to species, but male ants never live very long. Male ants die as soon as they mate giving them an average lifespan of a few weeks.
There are approximately12,400 known species of ants in the world today and they have a wide variety of lifestyles. Ant queens are estimated to live 100 times longer than solitary insects of a similar size. Ants are known to be the smartest species of insects with about 250,000 brain cells.

The ones that are tattooed around my ankles have been living there for years.  Dancing the entire time.
