Upper endoscopy is considered a safe procedure and complications after it are rare. Upper endoscopy complications are:
- A tear at the area of examination may occur as a result of the usage of an endoscope, but it is extremely rare.
- Inhalation of food or fluids into the lungs. Usually don’t occur because the patient fests for a period of time ordered by his treating doctor.
- Medications given by catheter may cause irritation of the vein by which they were given. In such case swelling, redness, and discomfort may appear, and if they do, the patient should contact his doctor or other relevant professional.
- Reacting to sedative medications may occur. It is minimized by the endoscopy team that matches the sedatives for patients with allergies, patients who are prescribed for other medications, and for those with different health conditions.
- Bleeding may occur as a result of polyps' removal or biopsies. Usually such bleeding is small and stops by itself.
Signs that should be reported immediately:
- A severe throat pains or difficulty in swallowing
- An extreme pain in the abdomen
- Distended and firm abdomen
- A crunching feeling under the skin of the neck
- Body temperature elevation
- Vomiting
