The foods listed in the following list have been found to trigger gout flares at gout patients, and thus should be avoided be them. Food that cause gout flares contain high amount of purines, which when ingested are broken down to uric acid. The later accumulates as crystals and causes pain at those prone to gout:
- Scallops (shells) and meet are reach in purines, that’s why when gout pains appear, those who suffer from it should avoid these foods. When there is no gout pains, patients should maintain scallops and meat intake to be no higher then 4-6 ounces per day.
- Not all fish should be avoided, but fish such as tuna, anchovies, and herring should be off the menu of gout patients.
- Beer also raises uric acid levels in gout patients, and thus should be avoided as well.
- Red meet such as beef and pork are also advised to be avoided of by gout patient, though they can be eaten one in a while.
- Turkey and goose and also advised to be reduced on gout patients diets.
- Beverages that are sweetened with fructose corn syrup such as fruit-flavored drinks and non-diet sodas should also be avoided. Such sweeteners stimulate uric acid production by the body.
- Cauliflower, asparagus, mushrooms, and spinach have high purine content and should also be avoided, though not entirely, by gout patients.
- Glandular organs such as kidneys, livers, and other sweetbreads are extremely prohibited.
