To a former slave the hardships of frontier soldiering had advantages of steady pay advance in rank and retirement pay so many chose to be career soldiers while whites could get better pay or desert and not get caught in civilian life in the west for they could blend in, therefore, these segregated black regiments of soldiers with 10,15 or 20 years service would have been a much more professional and better trained regiments than the white regiments where few soldiers elected to stay in as career soldiers. I read these statistics and logic would dictate that black regiments were better trained and disciplined due to years in grade and service than the white regiments were.
