    Be patient

    Hang out with people who speak the language you are interested in learning.  Conversely, stay away from the ones who speak the same language as yours..

    I notice people who stay within their own little enclave only ever learn the very basics.

    It is so true. I became quite fluent in English after 6 months in the U.S.

    I had no Asian friends to hang out with in Indiana. It was very tough.
