It means we are importing more "Stuff" than we export and whatever effect that has on the people doing the importing and exporting.
There was a time when American supported our own manufacturers and bought American made products to protect the jobs of the friends an neighbors.
Today not so much. In my opinion we Americans should be much more like the Japanese consumers, they buy primary products made by Japanese Corporations in Japan and abroad to save Japanese jobs and help Japanese corporation to survive.
Even those Japanese corporation the assemble things like vehicles, auto parts and electronics other products in the USA by all of their materials and parts from other Japanese manufactures in Japan, Canada and the US. The US Japanese manufactures buy most, if not all their raw materials like steel, rubber, plastics and pre-assembled parts from Japan
American consumers buy IMPORTS that help EXPORT the jobs of all Americans.
If the is not bad enough for our trade deficit, the federal Government continues to drive our manufacturing off shore with some really goofy regulations. Over the years the government has shut down hundreds of American plants like steel mills, chemical companies, paint manufactures, Steel, Iron, brass, and coper foundries, tanneries, iron, coal, coper, and gypsum mines and the list goes on Now not only do you know what the trade deficit is, you know what the trade deficit is doing TO our country ans why
