Dogs have superior nightvision and theire sense of smell is 40 times stronger than humans. They smell wild animals or anything out of the ordinarey and they go on alert mode.It really is a good thing, even if it is annoying, My dog has done that many times late at night, I always check. One night he was barking furiously and when I turned the light on , there was a brown bear running across my back porch.

As soon as I go to bed my Basset goes outside and howels her way around my house. Then she comes into my room and lays by my bed. She has told the world that she is on watch or something.
Occaisionally during the night if she hears some little noise she will go out and howel some more.
One night I coughed and she spent twenty minutes outside howling. I tried to call her in but she has a mind of her own. I would worry about the neighbors but they have a beagle.

My dogs are annoying at night also.My theory is this....Because their hearing is so superior to ours, they are awakened by noises we don't even hear, and for me,this is sometimes a good thing. Also, because of the hearing and lack of lots of exercise,my two don't sleep soundly,so when they feel as though they can wait til morning to pee, they say 'What the heck, may as well wake her up now,so that I can get a little fresh air." My unproven theory!!

Have any shoes or bricks hit your walls and windows at night? We had a neighbour who had three dogs. Two were guard dogs and the third was a pet dog. If the guard dogs were home all day they'd bark all day. At night, they barked until 9:00 PM. Everyone complained to the council, not me, I let the others do it. At times, he used to let them roam the streets during the day. They were very large dogs. One day, they came under a 4" gap on the bottom of our back fence and invaded the chicken run. Poor chickens, there were piles of feathers everywhere. Non of them were killed, they flew out of the run. But, one chicken died a month later. I whaled into them with a wooden broom. They yelped and went back out under the fence. Amazing how such huge dogs can squeeze into such a little space.
The two dogs are gone now as people are not allowed to keep savage guard dogs at home. The pet dog, hardly ever barks.
