I was going to say "a connection", but I like Umbriel's answer. There are physical, mental, emotional bonds between and among people.
There are also municipal, county, and federal (among others) bonds, which are a means of gathering funding quickly for something like highways. The state, for example, sells a "bond" for $1000. For that investment, you receive interest payments every six months or year for a specified number of years. At the end of the bond's life, you redeem the bond for the original investment.
Savings bonds are another type of bond. You can purchase a $100 bond for maybe $50. At the end of a specified amount of time, you can redeem the bond for $100.
You've heard of "bonding" time? That is spending time with a particular person in order to get to know each other better, share some experience together, and grow closer together as friends, lovers, parent/child, or other.
Then, again, there is the action of being bonded....contractors, tax preparers, and lots of other professionals need to be bonded. The bond they purchase is a kind of insurance to protect them from great financial losses if they make a mistake doing work for a client. For example, my mom was remodeling her kitchen. The contractor installed the wrong countertop, but when he learned of his mistake, he walked off the job. My mom went through the necessary steps to be reimbursed for the cost of getting the job done by someone. The insurance bond the bad contractor had paid my mom and the contractor had nothing out of pocket (although he should have been placed in front of a firing squad).
Lots of different meanings. I didn't even go into the most famous bond.....James Bond. :)
