    how do i test home thermostat

    I would compare the temperature of the room with a portable  thermometer to the recorded temp of the thermostat.  If they are equal, or even within a degree or two, I would be satisfied.  Next, I would raise the thermostat until the heat comes on, wait until room gets that temp. and see if furnace goes off.  If it does, and your portable thermometer agrees with the new room temp. then the thermostat is fine.
