It still amazes me to this day that people actually follow a god like this.

Good point Colleen, and why did God make men with foreskins if he wanted them circumcised?
Maybe because suffering the pain of circumcision is a way of proving you are willing to do anything for your God. Even going so far as to mutilate oneself.
Not too sure about that Colleen, Jews and Christians are normally circumcised before they know about God and whether He wants men to mutilate themselves. Some cultures perform circumcision at puberty so your theory may have some merit. Aboriginal circumcision, for example is a highly traumatic affair though they did not believe in the concept of God prior to Christian missionaries destroying their culture.
Well to be honest, I do not believe God had any part in commanding this ritual. To me, stuff like this is what cults do.
The extreme development of ritual genital mutilation was the Russian Skopotsi who used self- castration as a means of driving potent sexual energy into religious fervour. People still follow religious gurus such as the late Sun Myung Moon whose legacy includes assets such as Ski resorts, a daily newspaper, hotels and arms factories.
