Punishment for crimes may have some purposes:
    - Retribution: felons harmed society, so society sees itself entitled to inflict felons harm in return.
    - Deterrence: punishments threat people from committing crimes.
    - Incapacitation: felons are held in prisons and thus cannot commit more crimes.
    - Rehabilitation: punishments aim to change felons so that they would be able to be accepted back to society.
    - Restitution: felons are required to take action which purpose is to partially compensate victims for the injustice that they suffered.
