It depends. If you have hearing loss in both ears, then yes. If you don't, then not necessarily. Sometimes there can be a problem with hearing from certain directions, even if you only have loss in one ear. In that case you may need two hearing aids in order to correct the "directional" problem.

My late husband was supposed to wear them in both ears, but it bothered him. So, he wore one in only one ear. And he got a long very well with that.
My dad was deaf in one ear, so he wore only one aide in his good ear. A lot of people, like my friend, Carol can hear fine in one ear, but not the other one.
