dying a 'natural' death is not painful in most cases, the body allowed to live out its life will just shutdown, the amazing human body will protect itself right upto the last minute. usually the first organ to shut down naturally is the kidneys, when they quit working, you simply go to sleep. Anyone that has had a kidney disorder will say that they have a heck of a time keeping awake. lost energy, not much different than going to seep at night when you are tired, except this time you don't wake up.
In the case of violent death, yes, I would imagine it is very painful, however, if it is violent, it will be sudden and you won't feel it, certainly you won't remember it. What is bad is ongoing pain from disease and or accidents that the body's pain receptors continue sending danger messages to the brain, fortunately, there is very powerful medications that will take care of this so that this person can pass on in peace.
