The term 'redneck' comes from workers in the fields or outside construction, any job that would be outside work, being in the sun all day makes one's back of the neck red, these people were easily identified as outside workers because of their 'red necks'.. How the southern 'rednecks' got the title I am not really sure, maybe the same.. The term 'redneck' today is condescending and rude, however, most 'rednecks' don't really mind being called that, they are actually quite proud of it..
