Was there a man named Jesus, called Christ, who was crucified?

It is a historical undisputed fact that there was a man named Jesus from Nazzereth who was called Christ by Christians. Here in the US and in other countries around the world Easter is celebrated and the historical record is retold over and over again of how Jesus went before the Roman governor, Pilate. Pilate demanded that Jesus defend himself against the accusers and when Jesus would not Pilate ordered that he be flogged and beaten. The historical record states that Pilate told the crowd that he found no fault in Jesus and that he should release him. But the crowd cried crucify him! Pilate then turned him over to be beaten some more and the guards took turns torturing Jesus, beating him about the head and placing a crown of thorns on his head and mocking him. Afterwards Jesus is lead to the cross where they would pierce his wrist and feet nailing him to a cross and raising him up in the air. The Romans perfected torturing to death people condemned to the cross. As the cross is lifted high and it slams into the hole shoulder joints are dislocated as the body lunges downward adding to the pain and suffering. Many times it would take days to die as the person went in and out of consciousness, waking up over and over again to their nightmare. If they wanted the person to die quicker they would break their legs causing total colapse and imminent suffocation. The historical record states that Jesus was already dead when they came to break his legs so they pierced his side instead just to make sure.

No historical scholar, whether a believer in Jesus or not, would argue that the historical record is not accurate. Jews and Muslims even agree to the accounts of Jesus' crucifiction.

The following is found in the book of Isaiah. It speaks of the promissed Messiah to come who is called the Servant of LORD....

Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.
As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:
So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for [that] which had not been told them shall they see; and [that] which they had not heard shall they consider.
Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, [there is] no beauty that we should desire him.
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were [our] faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
But he [was] wounded for our transgressions, [he was] bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace [was] upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither [was any] deceit in his mouth.
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put [him] to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see [his] seed, he shall prolong [his] days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
He shall see of the travail of his soul, [and] shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore will I divide him [a portion] with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Now here is the clincher. It is an historical fact that Isaiah wrote this on behalf of God approximately 700 years before Jesus was ever born or was crucified just as Isaiah wrote. Fulfilled prophecy is what validates the entire bible as the very words of God.

I would love to see this as a confirmed historical fact! would this confirmed historical fact be "written" by any chance? and has it has been carbon dated and proved to be a genuine document with unbiased witnesses?

    faith is not proof ;-)

Carbon dating is in question too. After the flood (another historical fact) carbon dating changed caused people and things to age faster.

Raider, you say "if Jesus really lived". That is like saying if George Washington really lived. We have a historical record that is undisputed by believers and unbelievers alike. If you want to learn about Jesus you must first accept the truth of history. Then take the time to read what Jesus said in the Gospel of John. THen you have the freewill to reject His words or believe them. But please take the time to at least read what He said. Then you can make an honest evaulation.

That's very true, the evidence is out there, but do you really want to see it?

To make an educated decision you have to do the research, there's overwhelming evidence that Jesus did exist, you just have to get out there and look for it, if you really want to know?

Yes, true. What was the question? I guess it is how can you not believe, unless you just don't want to.

Simple proof. What year is it now.2011 AD. Our time even starts with Jesus. BC and AD.. If there was no Jesus why does our dates revolve around Jesus

    mycatsmom

Most people agree that there was a Jesus, but there is a disagreement that he was devine,or that he was God

Do you really believe in carbon dating.Modern man makes machines puts his knowledge in machine. And every one believes.I would like to see written proof. We can't even believe or agree on things that are happening right in front of our own faces. As for me i will keep believing in my father God.

Not sure on the question but, if it is if Jesus really lived, it is a matter of FAITH. That is a choice we have in this country. You can believe in what ever compels you to but if not for God, you may call him what you prefer, how did the universe, molecules, black holes, stars and life become? Why not GOD?

Did Jesus really live is a matter of historical documentation, which of course is undisputed among the faithful and faithless alike that He did indeed live and die as recorded. The matter of FAITH comes in as to whether or not one BELIEVES what He said and has FAITH in Him.
yes there was a man call Jesus crusified the only ones that doubts
this is a fool or a hatiest JOE

Jesus having existed does not validate the bible.. you presume that the bible itself was written by Jesus. If he existed, his message had nothing to do with worship and memorizing scripture like the pharisees did.. people squabbling over texts looking for truth.. he taught to love, love yourself, love your neighbors.. the truth comes as you are ready for it.

    FriendofGod

I can tell from your comment that you have not read all of the New Testament nor all of what Jesus said.

Jesus repeatedly said "It is written" and upheld the authority of the OT scriptures, drawing His teaching from those very written words and expounding on the spiritual intent of those writings.

Jesus' message was all about worshipping God and the Son of God, Himself. You have not read the gospels.

Jesus did not "write" the bible, yet Jesus is the Word of God became flesh, when Jesus spoke, He spoke the Word of God. If you read the gospels you will read this in John chapter one. God commissioned apostles and prophets to "write" down what God wanted us to know.

I have followed various comments from various 'hues' of people, with a lot of interest...

Apparently, a remarkable, revolutionary historical man: who was very iconoclastic in his ideas and made a remarkable impression on the people around that he became a hero figure (to a great majority of commoners) and adversary (to those in power)--preaching sacrifice, austerity, simple life, sharing things with people---like modern day socialists--and finally 'deified' and went into folklore and made the 'christendom.'
His ideas, teaching are simple, remarkable, but threatening to people in authority and rich and hence he was banished and punished/crucified. sadly the historical facts are always very unclear, as those we get are written by powerful and influential people who would like to be benfitted and who believed people would be benefitted. what we know is info from people who 'deified' him-probably 'spiced' it up inadvertantly (due to respect/faith) or intentionally(to influence more people). but the undeniable fact-even if you are believer or not-- he is truly reamrkable, revolutionary personality, who appeared in history as they say 'too soon for his age.
if you--both believers and non-beleivers--would like more--frank & interesting--discussions about the gospels and historical issues about jesus, you could read books by one of the professor of divinity in university of north carolina, Dr.Bart Ehrman (check 'amazon') or if don't feel you don't have that muchof time, money or energy, you could listen to his interviews with Ms. Terry Gross in 'NPR's program 'FRESH AIR'from WHYY philadelphia--also broadcast by many of the public radio stations (NPR stations) all over the country.
I hope to see the discussions in this forum to be civil and non-hurting--in these kinds of situations which arouse a lot of passion and heat--, realizing that this is not for pleasing or hurting anybody

Yes the SON OF GOD was a remarkable, revolutionary historical man. Love Randy

If there was a man named Jesus, then his message was independent of religion, therefore
why do you search the bible for answers? search your own soul. Take responsibility for it,
    and evolve. Ascend! =]

    Headless Man

You think you are your own GOD?

    Headless Man

Boy, I hope you can feel sure of yourself on your death bed, if not just ask for forgiveness and he will. Love and prayers.

We are all Gods of our own destiny. =]
I am. You are too, however; your spiritual evolution
has been hindered with religion. Break those constructs
    and set it free.. you have not given yourself permission;
you have not taken responsibility for your own destiny. ~ Much love
    goodluck.

No one has absolute power, it's for us all to share, certainly in this dimension; it is 50/50 between the universe and your soul. I can never be totally sure, but if there's anything that i'm sure about, its that there is greater enlightenment beyond religion and the bible, and I have yet to give someone a 'thumbs down' simply for voicing their religious beliefs.. you have something to defend even when you have limited your imagination's potential.. stale water certainly becomes bitter.
