I have 10, soon to be 20 Buff Orphingdon. They lay brown eggs. I bought 14 in May 2009. They started laying eggs in November that year and in January 235 eggs were laid. 4 were roosters and 3 were given to neighbors. One chicken was carried off by an eagle and one left to join a neighbors flock. I got 2 chicks last June but I don't remember their breed name...giant something with feathers on their feet. They run like they are wearing snowshoes. Fun to watch.

First layers are called pullets. Brown eggs come from dark coloured HENS red black etc. We used to feed our hens laying mash which was like bran with special elements in it to increase egg production. Don`t give it to the hens when they are young they will strain their little dingers trying to lay eggs, I believe you can now get "laying pellets " instead of the mash which had to be mixed in water. If the hens are not out in the open to graze give them your lawn clippings this gives lovely dark yellow yolks and give them shell grit, it is crushed up beach shells this strenghtens the shell.
