n American football, OTA stands for organized team activities or offseason training activities. OTAs are voluntary workouts and practices that occur in the football off-season, normally in late spring and early summer. OTAs combine workouts in the weight room with on-the-field practices to build team cohesion and to teach new plays. The NFL regulates how often OTAs can be held, how much contact is allowed, who can practice and whether practices are mandatory.
When OTAs Happen
From May until July, teams can conduct up to three practices a week for up to four weeks in addition to one three-day mini camp. Although they are allowed up to 14 OTA practices, few teams have more than 12. Excluding the three-day mini camp, teams cannot practice on weekends and practices can last no more than two hours.
