The 10 commandments, are they outdated, how would you change any of them?

    From Exodus 20:1-17
    1. You shall have no other gods before me.

    2. You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

    3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

    4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

    5. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

    6. You shall not murder.

    7. You shall not commit adultery.

    8. You shall not steal.

    9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

    10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

At times we let God down by breaking His rules but He loves us so much He has made a way for us to put things right. Such Love
When Jesus said on the cross, "it is finished," it meant the whole OT was finished, including the 10 Commandments. There are only two laws, and they are love: Love God, and Love others.
    Headless Man

I agree love would conquer all. However I think some need a cleared picture of what love is.
    Darci13

I have to agree with you Randy too many people have lust confused for love and that is not about love at all.....
No way they are very and always be very important.

No, they are etched in stone-forever.

I think Jesus already clarified this for us... Our Great commandment is to have no God before God.. and to love our nieghbor as ourself...

Why would the secular society be concerned with the 10 comandments?
why in the world do you think they are out of date.
they are timeless. if everyone followed them we would all be in a much better place. whether we are christian, jew, mohamaden, buddist, taoist, agnostic or even athieist.
The Ten Commandments form the core of the Old Testament law, as our Constitution and Bill of Rights form the core of the American law. This Old Testament law...
    1. Contained the written (codified) moral principles that God places in all of us at the age of accountability. (Rom 2:12-16)
    2. Contained the national law for the people of Israel.
    3. Contained a ceremonial (worship) law which foreshadowed the New Testament.
WHY DID GOD HAVE THE MORAL PRINCIPLES WRITTEN DOWN?
Gal 3:19 It was added because of transgressions…
1 Tim 4:1-2 …whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.”
Some people became callused to the laws of God because of their refusal to obey (1 Tim 4:2) and others because they were taught that right was wrong and wrong was right. (Gal 3:19) The result was confusion. By God having His law written down, the people could always refer to the written law to make sure what was correct.
Nine of the Ten Commandments are moral laws, one is ceremonial-“Remember to keep the Sabbath holy.”

    Today the Old Testament /Covenant/ /law is…
    • Old Heb 8:6
    • Aging Heb 8:13
    • Will soon disappear Heb 8:13
    • Changed Heb 8:13; Heb 7:11-12
    • Set aside Heb 7:18
    • Weak Heb 7:18
    • Useless Heb 7:18
    • Was only a shadow Heb 10:1
    • Canceled Col 2:14
    • Was against us Col 2:14
    • Taken away Col 2:14
    • Nailed to the cross Col 2:14
    • We are not under it any longer Gal 3:24-25
    • Destroyed Eph 2:14-15
    • Abolished Eph 2:14-15

We are under none of the laws of Moses but are under the laws of Christ which contain the basic moral principles that were in Moses’ law. We are under these principles not because they were commanded by Moses but because they are commanded by Christ. We need to be reminded, that much of Moses’ law was not basic moral principles and we are under none of Moses’ law.

Before Jamestown and Plymouth this country was ruled by Indians. The Indian nations had their laws. When the Colonial government was set up it had its laws. Today we are under the law of the United States. We are not today under the Indian laws or the Colonial laws even thought in some cases they required the same thing as does the law of the United States.

In the New Testament all of the moral laws have been restated. The only exception is the one ceremonial law, “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy” (which is not a moral law but ceremonial.) This law has not been restated in the New Testament and we are not under this law today.
no they are not outdated just not observed

    Good answer!
    whovin

    I agree with you

The cornerstone of Jewish and western civilization for thousands of years It is not out dated many countries have turn there backs on them  JESUS is the bridge joining the Old  and New Covenant's together  HE said you shall love the LORD you're GOD With all you're strength with all of you're heart and mind and you and shall love you're neighbor as you're self   on these two commandments hangs the laws and the prophets JESUS  messiah   SON OF GOD who died for the Jew's and the Gentiles please come to JESUS and pray for USA  for HE is returning soon!

No, they are not outdated and should not be change. They are quite simple to follow. They are a guide to a more peaceful life. God knows better and He is by far smarter than man. If man had obeyed these commandments, all the chaos in the world would not be happening. Don't forget about the seven deadly sins......pride, envy, gluttony, lust, greed, anger, and sloth. Yes it is sad to say, man cannot stay clear from these sins too.

The 10 Commandments are common sense. Why change them?
Change anything? Who me?? Un-uh! Not putting that one on me! God, Himself, wrote those out in His own words! I don't have the authority to go over His head and change anything!

I like them just the way they are. Only 10 of them, and they are straight on point!

The ten commandments are definitely out dated.  Not that we shouldn't use these laws as a basic guidline to how we should, as christians, live our lives.  You see, in the old testament, the wages of sin was death.  And the only way to come before our Father was thru a priest.  That is where animal sacrifices come into play.  But those laws are known as the "old law", old testament.  Since then, God realized that His children needed another way into salvation, so he sent his only begotten Son to take our place in death.  John 3:16  "For God so loveth man that He gave his only begotten Son".

Now we live in the new testament, under a new law.  Now the wages of sin are paid! thank you Jesus.   And we now can come before our Father, through Christ, just as Christ himself does.  In the old testament there were prophesise being told, and in the new testament, there are prophesies being fufilled.  One of which is the prophesy of the coming King.  We now have a new reason to be excited.  JESUS CHRIST!   halleluhia!

Hey, Randy! Calling Randy! Here is what the muslims wrote on their very large billboard: Jesus, a Prophet of Islam!
Here is part of the article from the news: CHRISTIANS in Sydney will have their core beliefs challenged by provocative advertisements due to appear on billboards and buses in the next month.

The ads, paid for by an Islamic group called MyPeace, will carry slogans such as ''Jesus: a prophet of Islam'', ''Holy Quran: the final testament'' and ''Muhammad: mercy to mankind''.

Their words doesn't shake my believe one bit, Jesus was a prophet and the Son of God.
Christians teach love non-believers, Muslims teach Kill them.
i can think of one country that certainly does not adhear to the 10 commandments especially 'thow shalt not kill.' and it is not in the east.
bulletman, There is no commandment "thow shalt not kill" it's "You shall not murder" Big difference between kill and murder.
    Jenn

I wrote this same statement on a dif. Q.. It confussed everyone... I am glad someone else gets it.
    bulletman

    you are still dead1
    Headless Man

Excuse my ignorance, I only ask you a question. How do you expect me to obtain wisdom if I don't ask questions?
    norm1

Randy, I like your line of reasoning.
I'd add one..thou shall not get a council flat just because your boyfriend got you pregnant.
Oh sorry never realized, that when gangstgers do drive by shootings they didn't mean to kill anyone.
    Headless Man

    No, Thats murder.....
    E rock

Killing someone and murdering someone are in essence the same thing, as defined by law.
    Headless Man

You can kill in war or self defense and thats not the same as murder.
    norm1

A man was once asked whether he would rather be killed with a cannon or a 22. He replied, “I’d rather be killed with a 22. The other man asked why. The fellow said, “Well, if you’re killed with a 22, there you are. But if you’re killed with a cannon--- you don’t know where you are.” Killing comes in degrees, reasons, and motives. It means one think to kill a human and another to kill a 3 leaf clover.
witchway, "Do as ye Will and Harm ye none" is a neat saying but if people do as ye will they break the commandment to, Put God first, Worship God only, Use God's name with respect, Remember God's Sabbath, and Be faithful in marriage. Can break 5 and not harm others.
    Headless Man

    Then if should read:
"Do as He Will and Harm ye none"

They are out dated. If you study the bible you will see that Jesus tells us to follow only two of the ten commandants:

Love thy lord thy God and do not put any others before him.

Love thy neighbor as thy love thyself.

    Look it up.

    Headless Man

Love ,kind of, is all of them...
Definitely not outdated. I know a group of atheists who sat down recently and reckoned that they obeyed all of the ten commandments. As an example: 'Thou shalt have no other Gods before me' They all agreed... as they did not believe in any God at all, they were actually obeying this commandment
    Headless Man

You don't get to heaven by obeying the 10 Commandments. However bet the atheists never #2 Worship God only or #4 Remember God's Sabbath.
