....the more we learn, even if it was unintended, benefits other research and more learning

....if we didn't, we wouldn't know the difference of an atom to a neutrino (e.g.)

I agree.  If you don't have any idea what you are doing, why should the government pay for it?  Oh, I answered my own question....

A lot of answers were learned from mistakes. Though not government funded,  Ivory soap was an accident, a mistake......
