Should governments offer college and university education free of charge to all students? Why or why not?

Only if it is paid back within a reasonable amount of time. Government (taxpayers) should not be expected to provide everything for everyone. Ambition is a great quality and nothing that is worthwhile is free nor is it easy!

So true Ducks...so very true...you are a sagely Duck y'know and this is one of the many qualities about you that I personally find very appealing!! (Big squishy hug here) In any case Ducky your words parallel those of another sage, Lao Tsu who is purported to have said something along the lines of...
"If you provide for the people...they will never learn to provide for themselves!"...which places us among the capable rather than 'dependents' on the 'state'.

Thank you lindilou. I wish that I could act as "sagely" as I sound. It's much easier to give good advice than to actually "do it". :)

Advice is a 'take it or leave it' kind of thing...unless you're paying for it...and more often than not...we pay and pay! I just paid off 20 grand in school loans...am I any smarter for it? I dunno....I have spellcheck enabled in any case...LOL

    LOL!!

Having been a professional student I think I should have been paid for being a student. When they choose to charge ME! for their classes, I thought it was the most outrageous idea I had ever heard of and resigned my post as a professional student .

    We never stop...from one ex-pro to another...LOL

I agree with the duck-- why do I have to pay for your education? What will you give me in return?  Student loans at reduced interest is a good thing, as long as you don't default on it and then you become my tax responsibility again.

Quit asking for G'ment handouts,  Quit soaking us taxpayers for things that are of no interest to us. Your education is your business, not mine!  I already paid for mine, no help, I worked and went to classes.  You try to keep up with me, you think you have it in you?? Don't be a begger!
