I'm presuming you have to write an essay and one of the topics from which to choose was negative political campaigns. If I am right, read on....if not, ignore me. NEVER write an opening sentence telling the reader what you are going to do. For example: Do not write, "I am going to tell you how to bake a cake." Something like, "Baking a cake is not as hard as you think." is going to be more interesting and probably get the reader to continue reading. Lead off with a statement that you can elaborate on as you continue your essay.
There is alot of controversy about negative political campaigns.

Would you believe there are positive aspects to negative political campaigns? (Yes, you can start an essay by asking a question)
Negative campaigns have their place in politics! (Already, someone is getting riled up and is going to read what you have to say just because of your opening sentence, which IS true, by the way.)
A negative political campaign can be a powerful weapon against a rival OR secure defeat for the candidate who resorts to using it. Let's examine both possibilities.
Hope this gives you some ideas.
