      Because the base for the word pilot is guide or navigation.

        Because if you called a pilot a flight attendant they really get pissed! then again, you don't want the flight attendant piloting the plane either.. So I think its best we call the pilot the pilot..  They seem to like that a lot..

          May be that the first one was Irish and when he was asked what he did he said he was a pilit. "I work in a stable picking up horse shit, and I pile it here and I pile it there.
