Baptism by water is taught in the scriptures as an outward expression of an inward repentance and belief in Jesus Christ. When one believes on Jesus Christ, Jesus Himself baptizes that person with the Holy Ghost which is what He called being "born-again" and is what further scripture calls "regeneration".

Actually, none of us are worthy of salvation. Jesus alone was worthy for He lived a perfect sinless life and then gave that life as a sacrifice for eternal life for all who will trust and obey His loving words.
A perfect sinless life is not possible, for through our mistakes is how we learn. Drop the religon, and what you're left with is the universe, and everything..
Receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour is what Jesus called being "born-again". This act of God alone is what places a person in the Kingdom of God as a child of God. From this point then a new child of God will learn and display the characteristics of Jesus Christ. Never perfect but always striving to be holy as God is holy.
