What to Pack for Inside Alaska Passage Cruise in September

Alaska's Inside Passage tempts visitors with abundant wildlife, jaw-dropping scenery and the rich history of Alaska's gold rush. From May to September, ships cruise the inside passage from Vancouver, British Columbia, north to Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Haines, Sitka and Glacier Bay National Park. In September, expect to see colorful fall foliage and migrating birds such as eagles and trumpeter swans. Retrace the steps of hardy gold rush pioneers or photograph bears putting on weight before their winter hibernation. Pack right, and you'll be comfortable no matter what the activity.

    Essentials

As with any trip away from home, pack your passport, travel documents and identification as well as emergency contact information and medication. Don't forget reading glasses and sunglasses. A travel-sized first aid kit may come in handy, along with packets of laundry stain remover and detergent for hand-washing clothing. For Alaska, don't forget your binoculars, camera, camera charger or extra batteries and an extra memory card. A guide to Alaska wildlife and birds can help you identify everything you see from the deck of the ship.

    Clothing

Bring comfortable, casual clothes to wear during the day and on shore excursions. Jeans, khakis, capris and other casual trousers should be suitable for exploring port towns and riding in a Zodiak to check out a pod of whales. Bring a swimsuit for the pool or hot tub on board the ship and dresses or nicer slacks for dinner. Most Alaska cruises are fairly informal, but you may wish to dress for dinner one night; women can pack a cocktail dress and men a suit and tie.

    Layers

While sunny days can be temperate and pleasant, you'll want to dress warmly at night and during cloudy or foggy days. Take clothes you can layer, such as lightweight knit sweaters, fleece jackets and a pair of light gloves and a hat. If you plan to do a lot of hiking, opt for synthetic fabrics that wick moisture away from the skin instead of cotton, which soaks up sweat and can leave you chilled.

    Rain Gear

The weather along the Inside Passage in September is often cool and rainy at times. Don't let the rain stop you from getting out and enjoying the still-spectacular scenery. Pack a hat and a light, waterproof coat. This will leave your hands free for photography or scanning the shore with binoculars. Bring waterproof footwear, too --- either rain boots or sturdy hiking boots that have been treated.

    Shoes

You'll need sturdy hiking or walking shoes for shore excursions, dressier shoes for evenings and a pair of flip-flops for the pool. Add a pair of tennis shoes if you plan to work out or jog around the deck.
