Video games are high culture. Parents don’t get it because they were raised
on print media, not multimedia. From Pong in the 60’s to the Xbox and Wii,
which platform games, systems and rpg games have you played. The rating
M tells kids that this is a cool game and if it is banned by parental control,
our children will play the games on their computer or their friends house!
Children were raised on television so they know how to process information
simultaneously using audio and visual cues. Banning games cuts off
a parent’s communication with their children. In their generation, restricting
the time parents could read imaginative literature like Tolkein’s lord of the rings or CS’ Lewis; phenomenal Chronicles of Narnia is analagous to telling your kids that they
can play video games on the weekends or for a short time during the week. The
consequence breeds hostility and misunderstanding of our contemporary youth culture.
Here are some examples of games I play with my clients as a high tech shrink. I trained
by mind beginning with Pong in the 70’s when systems like Coleco and Atari
were fun, but very prmitive when we look back and to the future of online computer
gamine and video systems. I have 9 systems and preordered the systems and
games for me and my son. The first rpg we played when he was six was Zelda
and the amazing Mario Games that continue to astound me. Guitar Hero,
Rock Band and the new console games like the Michael Jackson experience
and the Elton John experience where the performers a[[ear in a hologram and
teach you how to dance or play instruments to soundtracks of famous
rock and pop bands.
