I've never been hit since High School, but I think the unexpected is best, turn the other cheek, laugh, say GOD bless you, then when the look of surprise is on his face, poke him on the noise and run.....lol

Good answer hipster, usually with age comes wisdom. I also learned there are no winners in fights. If they look like they have a lot of money you might want to sue their butts off.t.u.2 u.
I guess it depends, in High School the biggest kid came up to me in gym class and punched me in the face, I turned to him and said,"what the ----." I decided I was to sore to get into a fight being the 3rd day of football practice, I figured I would just let it slide. Turn the other cheek.
Well as I turned the other cheek he hit that one too. I still didn't attack him, he outweighed me by at least 150lbs. I just dropped into a fighting stance, as he went to hit me a third time, I blocked his swing, and proceeded to rapidly pound him in the face. He came in close to grab me and I put him into a headlock and started pounding him in the face some more. He was screaming for help and the coach came over and broke it up.
The coach said if we shook hands he wouldn't send us to the office, so we shook hands and later became good friends. So yes turn the other cheek, but if they hit that one there's gonna be trouble. Oddly enough I didn't have a scratch on me except for my fists, he on the other hand, had to go to the school nurse to get Ice packs put on his face.
I did learn at an early age that I always felt bad after beating the crap out of someone, I never started a fight, and would stick up for the dorky kids when someone was picking on them. The truth is there is no winner in a fight, not really. Someone always gets hurt, goes to the hospital, or jail.

It is imperative to retalitate immediately while maintaining the context of self defense. Letting someone abuse you without consequence sets you up for the same abuse again later. Getting into a brawl and doing damage to your aggressor, even if it means getting bloodied yourself, will not only earn you the respect of others, but it will also tell them you will not take abuse without giving it back. In the long run, it will save you grief.
Always claiming self defense legitimizes your action should legal considerations arise. Everyone has the right to defend themselves, and if legal authorities say you should have run away, the response should be that you were prevented from doing so, whether that was pain, no opportunity, shock, or physical problems of some sort.
