1. Test the window to see how the balance is performing. Unlock it, and push it up. If it stays where you push it, the window balances are fine. If the window falls back down when you release it, replace the balances. Plan to replace them in pairs, since they are in both sides of the window.

Tilt the window in by pressing the releases on top of each corner. Allow the window to tilt in toward you. Tilt it all the way down until it rests on the window frame. Remove the plastic covers over the balances in the side of the window frame. Use a screwdriver to remove the plastic covers and expose the balances.
3. Check to see the length of your balances, since they come in different lengths. Use a cordless power driver and remove the screw from the balance. Use a measuring tape and measure the case tube only. Do not measure the entire length of the balance. A fairly common length for standard windows is 24 inches.
4. Reinstall the balance by threading the attachment screw through the hole at the top of the new
balance. Use a cordless drill to screw the balance back into place in its original hole. Line it back up in the hole at the top of the window jamb, and screw it into place.

Put your balance covers back in place. Snap them back into place just like you removed them initially.
6. Reattach the rod end with tension. Use a balance winding tool. Hook the tool to the lowest set of pins on the end of the balance rod. Wind the balance 10 to 12 complete turns, creating tension as you wind.
7. Reattach the rod to the shoe/hook in the bottom corner of the frame. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to replace the balance on the other side of the window. Tilt your window back up and snap it into the tilt latches when you have installed both balances.
