    Cartilaginous fish are a species of fish that are vertebrates or who have a back bone.

    There are two types of vertebrate fish, elasmobranchs and teleosts. The former has a cartilaginous skeleton, the latter a bony skeleton.

    Sharks and dogfish are elasmobranch fish, ie they have cartilaginous skeletons.
