iBooks
IBooks is Apple's own ebook platform. It offers a free reading application for the iPad. This app only accepts ebooks in the EPUB file format, and allows you to purchase ebooks from the iTunes iBookstore. Ebooks can be viewed as a single page by holding the iPad in its portrait orientation, or as two pages when rotating the device to landscape. This platform allows for illustration within ebooks and automatically saves bookmarks to your online Apple account for every ebook you open. These bookmarks are then synchronized with any other device that also uses the iBooks app.
Kindle
Kindle is Amazon.com's ebook reading and publishing platform, which is available for the iPad via a free Kindle application. This app grants access to Amazon.com's online bookstore directly from the iPad, allowing you to purchase new ebooks, download samples and subscribe to electronic magazines and newspapers. Bookmarks are automatically added to open ebooks and synchronized with your Amazon.com account, allowing you to continue reading where you left off on any other Kindle-equipped device. A large selection of free ebooks is also available through the Kindle Store.
Kobo
Kobo is an online ebook publisher that offers a free iPad application for reading, downloading and purchasing ebooks directly to the device. Customizable website and newspaper content can be configured through the Kobo app, which is delivered to the iPad automatically each day and added to its library. New ebooks and official newspaper subscriptions are also available through the online Kobo bookstore.
Stanza

It is capable of reading a large number of ebook file formats including EPUB, PDF, MOBI, PRC and plain text files. It can also display electronic comics stored in the CBR or CBZ file formats; it can download free ebooks from online resources, such as Project Gutenberg and Freebooks.
