Mean The mean is the most common type of average. It can be used for grades, percentages and dollar amounts. A mean is calculated by adding the total numbers in a group of data and then dividing the total by the amount of numbers. For example, suppose we need to calculate the mean for a group of test scores. The test scores are: 90, 82, 100, 77, 94, 85 and 89. When we add up the total we get 617. The 617 is then divided by 7, because there are 7 test scores. When the answer, 88.14, is rounded, we can say that the mean average test score is 88.
