What can you do if you don't like your divorce lawyer and can't afford another one?

Logically, if you can't afford another one, you'll have to stay with the lawyer you have or....stay attached to the marriage partner you have?

Ducky - Oh not so simple - so funny - do you know I heard you can get a divorce on line. I am going through nightmares at the moment trying to get out of this place - I am sure a divorce would be cheaper - my Solictor charges £325 per hour would you believe, nice work if you can get it - must say he's brilliant though - I hope so in the final analysis.

Lawyers fees are all over the place here where I live. One will charge a fee for service of $800. while another, doing the identical service, charges $1900. It seems that some accountants operate in a similar fashion. :)

lindilou - but there must be a cheaper lawyer - but better to have one he/she likes - traumatic enough without a dislike of the very lawyer.

Fifteen hundred dollars, fifteen hundred dollars, fifteen hundred dollars... get the darned thing over spending as little money as possible.

drop you lawyer and get a different one. You will be able to afford to pay a different one just like you paid your original lawyer.

mycatsmom - exactly - there must be another lawyer with the same price tag - but more compatibility - no way would I stay with a lawyer I did not like - especially dealing with divorce.

You have the right to change lawyers if you want. Usually, when you retain a lawyer, you pay a retainer fee upfront. Ask the lawyer for your running tab and see if there is any remaining monies available. You have the right to request any money not used to be returned to you. Also, when you retain another lawyer, a lot of ground work has already been done that you do not have to pay for now. When hiring another lawyer, make sure you do your due diligence, and interview them. After all, they are working for you.
