Changing oil in a vehicle is usually based (but there R other factors) on the amount of miles between service, so putting in new oil is OK. The normal time is around 3,000 miles, however it could be less.

and it could be up to 7000 miles. I work for an auto rental company and Fords require every 5000 while GM require 7000. It depends on how long you want to keep your car. If you want to keep it for years to come, change oil and filter every 5000 miles.
Well Gary I stand corrected. I'm 55 years old and 25 years ago that is what I was taught. I guess technology has come along ways.

Your owners manual should recommend when you get your oil changed.
If your car is not due for an oil change and you feel you need to add 1/2 a quart or so, there's no problem with doing that. Use 5W-40 if your owners manual doesn't recommend something else.
