I've known several people who reside in rather odd places secretly. Underground in Balboa park in San Francisco, on mining claims in national forests in every sort of convience. In rooms, in old houses that were paneled over and accessible through a trap door in the floor, behind a closet or bookcase etc.
Many people seek some form of escape from what they do not like and would rather not have to deal with...secluded and secretive. Usually there is an unusual fear of someone or something that drives them to such odd life styles of reclusive living. There are treatable medical and psychological conditions that can inspire seclusion and avoidance of remedy. There are drugs that can also be associated to this behavior like heroin and optimum of course. Intimidation can produce this response.
