From Answers:  The answer depends on what your engine size is. I am almost certain that all diesel Excursion either came with the 7.3 Liter or the 6.0 Liter. According to my Chilton repair manual for all Ford Excursions on page 1-39, they say the capacity for the diesel engine is 15 quarts. Their disclaimer states "*All capacities are approximate. Add as necessary to bring to the appropriate level." In my "7.3 Liter Power Stroke Direct Injection Turbo Diesel - Owner's Supplement Guide" it also states that the engine oil capacity is 14.2 L (15.0 quarts) and that this includes 1.9 L (2 quarts) in engine oil filter. When I change the oil and oil filter every 5000 miles in my 7.3L engine, I usually put in about 14 quarts of oil and then "add as necessary" after I run the engine. If you have a 6.0L, a simple ratio equation indicates that you should use about 12.3 quarts of oil. So I would start with 11 quarts and "add as necessary". It is best not to overfill any fluids on a vehicle.
