      Hurricane season begins in June and runs through the end of November.  It doesn't mean hurricane will happen every year.  It merely means that the conditions are ideal for hurricanes to exist, thus warranting some caution.

        My son lives half-way down on the Florida Keys. The concrete reinforced garage is his first floor. He lives on the second and third floors.. All of his windows are securely shuttered in preparation for a storm.  He hasn't been through a Hurricane Season yet and I really wish he would come back to alligator-free California. All we do here is quake and shake.
