Gasoline is a mix of liquid hydrocarbons. The production of gasoline takes place in a refinery where hydrocarbons are heated and pressurized in the presence of catalysts to combine hydrogen and carbon into long chain molecules and seperated by molecular weight to produce fuels. The process is tightly controlled and efficient in their product production. The technology has evolved from origins that go back over centuries of time and the fuel quality bares little resemblance to its origins. The technology involved in these processes are so advanced that, in my opinion, automotive fuel can be produced at the current level without using oil from any source directly, as a basis of fuel production. The cost of fuel at the pump is regulated in a cooperative association with our government.
