Spelling is important. Even though some think that it's fine to write "you" as "u" and "see" as "c" and so on, it may not be. Keep in mind that prospective employers appreciate good communication in their places of business and most of those employers are much older than the prospective employee. Texting language and slang could be frowned upon and the other guy will get the job.

When I taught high school, a kid would ask "does spelling count"? I would go off and say, "no more than breathing, eating, exercising, and other life functions... They would usually get the message. I would not continue to correct papers of kids too lazy to spell correctly. I would return the corrected paper with the score, but not put it into my records until they corrected the spelling! Once or twice was enough to convert some who were spellers but lazy.
