If it's a federal halfway house it's very similar to being in prison only lower security and it's definitely illegal to escape and why should one as they are halfway home if they are there (hence the name halfway house). I believe you'll receive a couple more year tacked onto the orginal sentence. Imagine it varys from state to state. Now other types of halfway houses i.e., homeless, alcoholics, drug addicts, those types probably depends upon if you are there voluntarily or court ordered as to the outcome associated with your excape if caught or sought out by the law.
