QUESTION: Thomas,
Thank you for your answer. I am attaching a picture of the cufflinks for you to see. I think drilling the hole is a great idea. I think I want them to hang vertically so I would have to put the hole in the middle of the short side. What do you think? Can I use a regular drill bit or do I have to use a special one to drill through the gold?

You only need a standard drill bit made for drilling metal. Most home supply or hardware stores will have small ones. The trick is to use a small bit and leave enough metal around the hole for wear-ability. It is best if you have a starting place so the bit will not wander when started and make marks on the surface. I believe a light tap with a small nail will make a starting place. Have the metal on a flat solid surface when you tap with the nail so there in no deformation to the metal, only a small recess for starting the drill bit.

Personally I would be a little reluctant to mix water with electricity. Yet when I did the research the web sites I visited offered the same advice.
